Dr. Cherrie Short, CBE, is a Senior Fellow for Global and Community Strategy at the Silver School of Social Work and the Wagner School of Public Service at New York University. She is an experienced advocate for social justice and a qualified forensic social worker emphasizing global approaches to social injustices.
Dr. Short is a visiting scholar at the Metropolitan University of Wales in the United Kingdom, a writer/columnist for the Western Mail newspaper in the UK, a member of the Governing Board and a goodwill ambassador of the International Social Service (ISS) agency, an international NGO founded in 1924 and based in Geneva, Switzerland, which protects and supports migrant and refugee children and families who have experienced social, economic and other challenges.
Before joining NYU, Dr. Short served as the Associate Dean for Global and Community Affairs and Professor of Practice at the Dworak-Peck School of Social Work at the University of Southern California. Then, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed her to the Governor’s Rehabilitation Strike Team, which focused on reforming the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Dr Short has served in senior leadership roles in government in the United Kingdom. Prime Minister Tony Blair appointed her to the U.K. Race, Equality, and Human Rights Commission, an independent regulatory agency with the authority to enforce U.K. laws on racial equality and human rights. Among many other awards, Dr. Short received the esteemed CBE award (Commander of the British Empire), one of the UK’s highest public service awards given by Queen Elizabeth II, for her extensive work in race relations and human rights.
