Pollution and Health: A Global Public Health Crisis
Explore our main reportTackling Lead Pollution: GAHP Faciliated Multisectoral National Dialogues in Brazil and Paraguay
The Global Alliance on Health and Pollution (GAHP) has taken a significant step in addressing the informal management of used lead-acid batteries (ULABs) and combating lead contamination in Latin America. With leadership from Dr. Lilian Corra, GAHP’s Senior Advisor, multisectoral national dialogues were facilitated in Brazil and Paraguay to bring together stakeholders and drive actionable solutions.
Paraguay’s Focus: Health Risks and Circular Economy Solutions
Hosted by Paraguay's Ministry of Environment (MADES) and GAHP, this multisectoral dialogue united government, private sector, and experts to advance sustainable management of Used Lead-Acid Batteries (ULABs) under the MERCOSUR project as part of GAHP’s initiatives during WHO’s International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week. Discussions focused on strengthening regulations, introducing tools like lead mass balance, and assessing health impacts from toxic exposure.
Brazil’s Focus: Technical Expertise and Collaboration
Multisectoral National Dialogue on the Informal Management of Used Lead-Acid Batteries (ULABs),” led by Dr. Lilian Corra , was held in Brazil. This workshop brought together government representatives, private sector leaders, and experts to confront the critical issue of lead contamination from informal ULAB management and illegal trafficking — a leading cause of toxic lead exposure in the region 🇧🇷
Through advocacy, capacity building, and informed multi-stakeholder dialogue, this event provided a platform to identify key actors and build collaborations.
Cross-Sector Collaboration for Sustainable Solutions
These dialogues align with GAHP’s mission to combat toxic pollution globally. By fostering cross-sector collaboration, the events marked a critical step in developing sustainable solutions to the environmental and health challenges posed by informal ULAB management.
GAHP’s efforts to bring together government agencies, international organizations, and technical experts demonstrate the importance of unified action in addressing complex pollution issues. Initiatives like these provide a roadmap for reducing pollution and protecting public health.
