Tackling Lead Pollution: GAHP Faciliated Multisectoral National Dialogues in Brazil and Paraguay

The Global Alliance on Health and Pollution (GAHP) has taken a significant step in addressing the informal management of used lead-acid batteries (ULABs) and combating lead contamination in Latin America. With leadership from Dr. Lilian Corra, GAHP’s Senior Advisor, multisectoral national dialogues were facilitated in Brazil and Paraguay to bring together stakeholders and drive actionable solutions.

Paraguay’s Focus: Health Risks and Circular Economy Solutions

Hosted by Paraguay's Ministry of Environment (MADES) and GAHP, this multisectoral dialogue united government, private sector, and experts to advance sustainable management of Used Lead-Acid Batteries (ULABs) under the MERCOSUR project as part of GAHP’s initiatives during WHO’s International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week. Discussions focused on strengthening regulations, introducing tools like lead mass balance, and assessing health impacts from toxic exposure.

Brazil’s Focus: Technical Expertise and Collaboration
