GAHP Participated in Basel Convention's Second Meeting of the Small Intersessional Working Group on Waste Battery Guidelines

From November 18 to 22, Dr. Lilian Corra represented the Global Alliance on Health and Pollution (GAHP) at the Expert Group of the Small Intersessional Working Group (SIWG) meeting. Held under the Basel Convention, the meeting centered on reviewing the Guideline on Environmentally Sound Management of Used/Waste Lead-Acid Batteries (ULABs) and developing a new guideline for other non-lead-acid waste batteries.

Promoting Sustainable Battery Management

The Expert Group’s discussions aimed to update technical guidelines to encourage sustainable practices for managing ULABs throughout their lifecycle. These practices span production, use, disposal, and recycling. Participants included experts from governments, international organizations, and non-governmental organizations, all demonstrating a shared commitment to overcoming the challenges of environmentally sound management of ULABs, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Discussions also took into account the latest best available techniques (BAT) and best environmental practices (BEP).

Looking Ahead: Outcomes and Goals

Outcomes from the meeting will contribute to discussions during the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention (COP-17), set to take place from April 28 to May 9, 2025, in Geneva. These proposals are designed to equip countries with technical tools and insights to better address issues related to ULAB management. The ultimate goal is to reduce pollution and the health impacts of lead exposure, aligning with global sustainability targets.
