The Global Alliance on Health and Pollution (GAHP) welcomes this collaboration which strengthens our shared commitment to improving health outcomes by addressing pollution and enhancing workplace safety on a global scale.
The Society of Occupational Medicine (SOM) is a leading organization in the UK dedicated to promoting occupational health and preventing workplace diseases. With extensive expertise, SOM advances worker health and safety through sustainable practices and active engagement in education and research. Their focus includes safeguarding workplace health, preventing injuries, and addressing related environmental issues. SOM’s commitment to environmental responsibility closely aligns with GAHP’s mission, as both organizations work towards reducing health risks and promoting sustainable practices globally
SOM’s decision to join GAHP is driven by a shared goal of addressing pollution and occupational health challenges, particularly through an Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) project. This initiative aligns with SOM’s broader mission to enhance workplace conditions in sectors where pollution poses significant health risks to workers and surrounding communities. SOM intends to leverage its expertise to support GAHP’s initiatives, promoting the exchange of knowledge and best practices that can benefit communities worldwide.
In a statement, SOM emphasized its commitment to creating healthier workplaces for all:
“We are thrilled to join GAHP in this vital mission. Every worker deserves a safe environment that minimizes health risks and protects the surrounding ecosystem.” said Nick Pahl, SOM’s Chief Executive.
Pahl went on to underscore the alignment between SOM and GAHP, remarking:
“We recognize GAHP’s expertise in addressing pollution to improve health and tackle environmental challenges. Together, we’re committed to advancing workplace health through the Occupational Medicine Society Collaborative, which SOM co-founded. This partnership aims to renew focus on these issues—not only because it’s the right thing to do, but because prioritizing health and environmental well-being is essential for nations to meet their commitments to the UN Sustainable Dvelopment Goals.”
GAHP's Executive Director, Maria Paola Lia, welcomed the new collaboration, stating:
“We’re pleased to welcome SOM to the GHAP Council! Together, we’ll strengthen our efforts to promote healthier workplaces and tackle global health challenges tied to occupational and environmental risks.”
