In March, GAHP participated in the first meeting of the Small Intersessional Working Group of experts on technical guidelines for waste/used lead acid and other batteries under the Basel Convention. International Environment House Geneva.
Highlights: The objective of the meeting is to advance the work on updating (on W/ULABs) and developing (on other than non-lead acid batteries waste) and the technical guidelines on waste batteries, as per COP16 decision BC-16/6. The experts participating included representatives from governments and different areas involved. The last draft will be revised again during the fourteenth meeting of the Open-Ended Working Group -OEWG14 (25 to 28 June 2024, Geneva).
Organizer: Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions.
GAHP's active participation in this initiative is aligned with our commitment and mission to enhance global health by addressing pollution issues. Throughout the revision process, our emphasis has been on the critical aspects of reducing toxic exposure and safeguarding human health and biodiversity, encouraging the leverage of existing scientific knowledge on the burden of disease associated with Blood Lead Levels (BLLs) in adults and their significant correlation with Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). Due to the comments and experience shown by GAHP during the review of the different drafts, GAHP was requested to review and send an alternative proposal to replace the original one under Section J. on Health and Safety.
