The 2017 groundbreaking publication The Lancet by the Commission on Pollution and Health addressed the full health and economic costs of air, water and soil pollution. Through analyses of existing and emerging data, the Commission revealed pollution’s severe and underreported contribution to the Global Burden of Disease, the economic costs of pollution to low- and middle-income countries, and the costs of inaction. This seminal report, which received extensive global media coverage, brought pollution squarely into the international development agenda.

GAHP and the NYU School of Global Public Health convened a group of leading researchers to update the analysis using data from IHME’s 2019 Global Burden of Disease. Authors presented the key findings of the paper ahead of its publication on May 18, 2022 in The Lancet Planetary Health journal.
